Find out why John Chapman believes experienced leadership is essential to navigating Alexandria’s budget cuts, recessions, and metro shutdowns.

The upcoming election in Alexandria is sparking conversations about the need for strong, experienced leadership on the city council. To discuss these critical issues, I sat down with John Chapman, a long-serving council member and Alexandria resident, to explore his vision for the city’s future.

During our conversation, Chapman highlighted his decision not to run for mayor in favor of maintaining experienced leadership on the council. With Alexandria facing economic challenges, such as budget cuts, affordable housing, and infrastructure sustainability, Chapman believes seasoned leaders are crucial to guiding the city through these complex issues.
“This project aims to increase connectivity, improve walkability, and support sustainable growth.”

He aims to secure his position as vice mayor, which would mark a historic moment with two African-Americans in council leadership.

Chapman also shared insights about Alexandria’s upcoming redevelopment of the Landmark Mall area into a vibrant, mixed-use community space featuring residential units, retail, parks, and a hospital as its anchor. This project aims to increase connectivity, improve walkability, and support sustainable growth.

As a fourth-generation Alexandrian, Chapman is not just focused on politics but also on community engagement. He actively connects with residents, encouraging them to vote, volunteer, and support the campaign.
